7 Signs of Hidden Mould in Your Home
Seven signs of hidden mould in a Kitchener home — most of them things you smell, feel or notice about the house before you ever see a spot.
Mould in Kitchener houses is usually behind something — basement drywall, carpet on a slab, the attic hatch nobody opens. Here's what the house tells you before the growth becomes visible.
1. A musty smell that comes and goes with the weather
Stronger after rain, in spring, or when the furnace kicks on. In a finished basement on the east side of Kitchener that's damp carpet or wet wall cavities. If it's strongest at the top of the stairs, check the attic.
2. Symptoms that ease when you leave
Congestion, itchy eyes, coughing or worse asthma at home that improves at work or on vacation. Especially telling if it's the person who sleeps in the basement bedroom.
3. Past water you "dealt with"
A sump failure, a spring seepage, a dishwasher leak, a window well that overflowed once. If the wet material wasn't removed or professionally dried within 48 hours, assume something grew.

7. The attic you haven't looked in
Post-war Kitchener bungalows and splits with a bathroom fan ducted into the attic, or none at all, very often have dark staining on the underside of the roof deck. It's out of sight and out of the air you breathe — until the ceiling leaks air through pot lights and hatches.
