How to Prevent Mould in Your Home
How to keep mould out of a Kitchener home — the handful of habits and fixes that matter most, by the kind of house you live in.
Mould needs moisture, and in Kitchener the moisture comes from a short list of predictable places. Deal with those and most homes never see a problem.
Humidity — the year-round one
Keep indoor humidity under about 50% in summer and lower in winter, low enough that windows don't sweat. A dehumidifier in the basement from May to October is the single best purchase for most Kitchener homes, especially finished basements on the clay east side. In winter, if the windows are wet every morning, the humidifier on the furnace is set too high.
Bathrooms and kitchens
Run the bathroom fan for twenty minutes after every shower — a timer switch makes it automatic. Check where the fan goes: in a lot of post-war Kitchener bungalows it ends in the attic, which is how attic mould starts. Use the range hood when you cook.
Outside the foundation

By type of house
- 1950s–70s bungalows and splits: get the bathroom fan ducted outside, clear the soffit vents, and top up the attic insulation. Check the attic every winter for frost on the nails — that's condensation.
- Century homes in Victoria Park, Cedar Hill, Mount Hope: don't finish directly against a rubble foundation; keep stored items off the basement floor; ventilate.
- Newer homes in Doon, Huron Park, Williamsburg: tight construction means small leaks matter more. Check under sinks, around the water heater and at window corners twice a year, and make sure the HRV is running and its filters are clean.
After any water event
A burst pipe, a sump failure, a basement seepage in a spring thaw — everything wet needs to be dry within 48 hours. Carpet and underlay on a slab almost never dry in time; pull them.
